Roy Keane built a reputation for being one of football’s biggest characters both on and off the pitch.

Renowned for being a fierce competitor in his playing days and brutally honest as a pundit in retirement, the ex-midfielder has won admirers all over the place for his no-nonsense approach to game.

This is exactly why fans love it when the 50-year-old breaks character.

Keane has taken to life on social media like a duck to water with his dry sense of humour bringing him more than two million followers on Instagram alone.

There he has shared multiple throwback images and witty posts and his latest one caught the imagination of former teammates.

Keane is seen out for one of his walks and wrote: “My PR team told me that I needed to create content today. Enjoy.”

He is then seen climbing onto a rope in an apparent bid to reach the other side of the river.

Keane certainly looked to be enjoying himself as he shared a wry smile to the camera with his golden Labrador also looking on.

Beckham was a long-time teammate or Keane during their time together at Manchester United with the global superstar winning many trophies at Old Trafford, including the treble in 1999 alongside his skipper Keane.

He clearly enjoyed his latest post and replied with a laughing emoji.

Wright, the former Arsenal striker who spent much of his career as one of Keane’s rivals, posted similar.

While they were once rivals on the pitch, the pair have enjoyed a close relationship after crossing paths as television pundits in recent years.

Both Beckham and Wright will know Keane much better than the majority of the general public, perhaps recognising how uncomfortable he was filming such a comical video for social media.

Keane may have ambitions of stepping back into management at some point

Keane has aspirations of stepping back into management and has been linked with Hibs.

He has been out of the dugout for a while, having previously been in charge of Sunderland and Ipswich. According to David Connolly, the ex-Manchester United skipper was regarded by many as being ‘a bit brutal’.

He told talkSPORT: “I can only really talk for myself but it seemed like he signed players on their ability but also he placed quite a lot of it on character maybe and the importance of that.

“His honesty was maybe a bit brutal and maybe you had to have a thick skin to deal with it and if you couldn’t you might find it difficult to play or thrive under Roy – some players did and others didn’t.

“His version of a pat on the back would be a thumb up or a sort of nod or ‘well done’. He was quite subtle, he wouldn’t be overly tactile. He wasn’t a contact manager, not much hugging or high fiving but you’d certainly have a handshake before you go out and you’d be expected to do your job and he trusted you to do it.

“A lot of it is signing players able to perform, not necessarily coaching them to improve 100 per cent. That wasn’t Roy’s way.”
