Berge has been a fine performer for the Blades throughout his three years at the club and has been linked with Liverpool and Chelsea.

And Heckingbottom has confirmed that there is interest in his midfielder this month but insisted that there have been no official bids for his services.

“I think there’s been interest,” he said. “And there always is.

“You start to hear it before windows and things like that, but there’s been no bids.

“All I can do is stress the same things. With the position we’ve got ourselves in, I don’t want anyone to leave. The landscape’s changed with where we are and what we’ve got.

“But from my point of view, if we’re embargoed, it’s even more important they don’t leave. My stance on that won’t change.”

Sheffield United were hit with a transfer embargo which means that they cannot sign any players while they are also chasing promotion to the Premier League.

It means that the Championship outfit would not be able sign a replacement at a crucial point of the season but that has not stopped Liverpool and Chelsea taking an interest in Berge.

Injuries have troubled both Premier League clubs and they are struggling as a result with a top-four finish looking improbable for them.

It has not stopped them from looking to reinforce the squad this month with Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo while Chelsea snapped up Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile and David Datro Fofana.

Jurgen Klopp is desperate for a midfielder with Jude Bellingham heavily linked, though there is no chance of a transfer this month with a summer bid likely.

Wolves star Matheus Nunes has been looked at by the Reds while Chelsea have been courting Everton ace Amadou Onana.
