Wilfried Zaha’s importance to Crystal Palace has been outlined by the club’s assistant manager Ray Lewington, who also downplayed suggestions the forward could leave Selhurst Park this summer.
Zaha, 25, ended the Premier League season with nine goals and three assists to his name, further strengthening his claim to be called the best player outside the top six.
The Eagles are an unfocused mess without Zaha on the pitch - which was too frequent an occurrence in 2017/18 due to injury - but they turn into a fearsome outfit when selected.
Lewington, who has been assistant since Roy Hodgson succeeded Frank de Boer as Palace manager, joined talkSPORT to heap praise on Zaha.
“Wilf is so important to Crystal Palace,” Lewington told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. “He’s the darling of the crowd.
“He is, possibly, the best player I’ve ever seen running with the ball at pace; if he gets that final ball more consistent, then…
“I certainly wouldn’t want to play against him every week!
Asked if Zaha is going to stay at Crystal Palace this summer, despite interest in him from the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham, Lewington replied: “I think so.
“Certainly for the time being, he wants to play for us.
“The crowd love him… they just adore him.”
