Kieran Tierney will become the first Isle of Man-born player to appear in a league match for 72 years if he makes his Arsenal debut against Manchester United on Monday night.

The 22-year-old played 77 minutes of Arsenal’s 5-0 thumping over Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup last Tuesday and was subsequently left out of the Under-23’s squad at the weekend to face Liverpool.

The Scotland full-back has fully recovered from a double hernia operation and looks set to make his Premier League bow at the Emirates.

The last player to feature in a league game from the Isle of Man was Ken Burns.

The former Southport winger featured against Barrow in a third division north encounter in 1947.

The £25million summer signing, who moved to Scotland when he was 10 months old, has previously discussed his heritage and the possibility of playing for the Isle of Man.

“That’s where I was born,” said Tierney in an interview with the Herald in 2015. “It’s a strange one, but it’s one I’m proud of.

“I go back to visit quite a lot and I get a lot of support from people on the island.

“It’s not a FIFA or UEFA team so you can’t compete in competitions like that but they have a team that contests the Island Games and things like that.

“They are part of the ConIFA World Cup. They asked me to be involved in that but I didn’t go. You never know. I could end up there.

“It’s something I would like to do. Coming from the Isle of Man, you can play for any – Scotland, England, Northern Ireland or Wales.”
