Manchester United’s ‘top class’ youngster James Garner tipped to become household name by end of the season

Manchester United fans will know who ‘top class’ James Garner is by the end of the season, Darren Fletcher believes.

Garner made his Red Devils debut last season but his cameo showing against Crystal Palace in February remains his one and only United appearance to date.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has twice selected Garner, the midfielder, on the bench this term, though he failed to make it onto the pitch against Astana or Rochdale in the Europa League and Carabao Cup respectively.

Nonetheless, Garner is clearly highly-rated by Solskjaer, who has already given first-team minutes to Mason Greenwood, Axel Tuanzebe, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Brandon Williams this term.

And Fletcher, the former Red Devils midfielder, says Garner will be the next academy prospect drafted into Solskjaer’s XI.

He’s so confident, in fact, that Fletcher claims Garner will become a household name by the end of the season!

“I think the history of the club says they demand and they want young players in the team and they support that,” Fletcher told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It does give your more time when you give youngsters a chance because people see it as refreshing and see it as building for the future.

“I think that they are more than ready to play, it’s just that, can you have too many at once?

“People talk about the leaders and who is going to help them, which is an important side, so it’s a difficult one but I’m sure as the season goes on you’re going to see more of James Garner because he’s top class.

“I’m surprised he’s not featured so far but by the end of the season I’m sure that people will know who he is without a doubt, if you don’t by now.”

One of Garner’s fellow academy prospects, the aforementioned Mason Greenwood, could be handed his full Premier League debut this evening – against Arsenal.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are both doubts for the match, with Greenwood the only other natural centre-forward Solskjaer can call upon.
