Arsenal manager Unai Emery almost wins by preferred scoreline, but Liverpool striker Divock Origi ruined it with goal
Had it not been for Divock Origi, Unai Emery would have had overseen his perfect game.
Arsenal were sailing into the Carabao Cup quarter-final, leading Liverpool 5-4 at Anfield, but the striker scored in stoppage time to take the game to a penalty shoot-out, which the hosts won, as Caoimhín Kelleher saved Dani Ceballos’ spot-kick, allowing 18-year-old Curtis Jones to win it.
As a result, Liverpool, not Arsenal, are heading into a last eight match against Aston Villa.
Talking about the characteristics of an Unai Emery team, the manager, in his first interview following his arrival at the club in 2018, told the official website: “With personality. This personality for all the minutes of a match: protagonists. I like the possession with the ball, I like good pressing against the other team.
“I prefer to win 5-4 than win 1-0.”
And the manager was seconds away from achieving this.
After the defeat, Emery admitted he was impressed with Mesut Ozil, who he had recalled back to the starting XI for the first time in six weeks.
His performance showed Arsenal what they have been missing, including a clever flick which teed up Ainsley Maitland-Niles to score.
“It was very good,” Emery told talkSPORT when asked about Ozil’s display.
“I think he used tonight to help the team and he’ll take confidence into the next matches.”
He then later explained why he had taken the no.10 off, revealing he was being carefully managed with an eye on Saturday’s Premier League clash with Wolves.
“We decided before the game to only play him for that amount of time,” said Emery.
“Yes he will feature [against Wolves]. We have a match on Saturday and we will look at the possibility to use him again alongside other players and this is the way sometimes.”
