Football writer ‘worried’ for Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn’t improve players
There are fears Bruno Fernandes may not reach the heights expected of him at Manchester United following his £67.7million arrival from Sporting Lisbon.
The Red Devils finally confirmed the signing of the Portugal international on Thursday, the eve of deadline day, after a month-long pursuit.
Fernandes, who has been described as ‘the best player in Portugal by miles’, moves to Old Trafford on the back of a sensational scoring run for Sporting.
The 25-year-old netted a record-breaking 31 goals from midfield last season, and has also been in fine form this term with 15 goals and 14 assists in only 27 games.
But football writer Darren Lewis is concerned the midfielder may not have the same impact at Manchester United, claiming manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears unable to get the best out of his players.
Speaking on Thursday’s Kick Off, the journalist said: “I’m worried for him actually.

“He is the latest in a number of marquee signings that Manchester United have made, and some of them have just not worked out.
“We’ve seen the numbers and he’s got a wonderful record, but is Solskjaer improving players?
“Mason Greenwood has a touch of class about him anyway, he was always going to be a good player, but you look at the other players… Anthony Martial, has he really improved from being at Manchester United?
“People malign [Romelu] Lukaku but he needed work. If Lukaku had work, if he had people invested in making him better he’d have been better, he’s gone to Inter now and he’s a better striker for it.
“I know there is a pressure playing for Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, but if you’re going to make investments into footballers you have to work with them to make them better.
“You can’t just bring them in, put them in a tactical system and say, ‘do what you did at your previous club’.
“I look at some of the marquee signings Manchester United have made and it looks like that’s what they’re asked to do.
“I’ve seen headlines like, ‘Fernandes is going to bring success’… no, he’s not! The TEAM will bring success to Manchester United.
“If you can fit him into the team and get the players around him to enable him to give his best, produce and play with confidence, then he can help the team to bring success.
“But he’s not going to do it by himself, no chance.”
