Vincent Kompany turned down the chance to become Pep Guardiola’s No.2 at Manchester City, it has been revealed.

The Belgian left the club he had been with since 2008 at the end of last season for a new project as a player-manager at Anderlecht.

He signed off his City career by helping them win the domestic treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, scoring a crucial goal in their penultimate league match of 2018/19.

This season, City are on the verge of losing their status as English champions with Liverpool 25 points clear of them at the top of the table.

Guardiola has also had to deal with losing No.2 Mikel Arteta mid-season, who became Arsenal manager in December.

And The Sun reports that Kompany was approached by his former club to take up a key role under Guardiola.

However, Kompany confirmed to Anderlecht he is committed to the role until his contract expires in 2022.

He has also put in some of his own money into his boyhood club as part of a takeover which recently went through.

The report also says that a major factor in Kompany rejecting Guardiola’s offer was because he wants to carry on playing, having missed much of his career with injury, and fears he may not get that chance at the Etihad.

His first season as a player-manager has been mixed, with Anderlecht finishing eighth in the league. The 2019/20 Belgian top flight season was ended early due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Guardiola is understood to be on the hunt for a new assistant with The Sun’s report linking former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso with the role.
