Avram Grant would have been ‘sent to Siberia’ if Chelsea finished fourth under him, but praises Frank Lampard on ‘big achievement’
Avram Grant insists he would have been ‘sent to Siberia’ by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich if the Blues finished fourth under him.
In his debut managerial campaign at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard guided Chelsea to a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
He could also end the season with silverware if his side beat Arsenal in Saturday’s FA Cup final.
Grant, who lost the League Cup and Champions League finals in his only season as Chelsea boss after replacing Jose Mourinho in September 2007, believes Lampard has done well given the club had a two-window transfer ban.
He told Stats Perform News: “I think it’s a good season, especially compared to how it began, without being allowed to buy players.
“Compared to the requirement of Roman Abramovich, if I told him some years ago that fourth place would be good for him, probably he would send me to Siberia.
“But because of the situation before, I think it’s a good place. For Frank, I think it’s a big achievement.
“It’s his first year as a coach in the Premier League. Of course, he was a player with a lot of experience, but you cannot compare a player to a manager, and I think he’s managed the team very well.
“A lot of young players and he knew how to play them, how to give them a rest and when to push them.
“It’s a good base for the future, I was very pleased with his performance.”
While ensuring Champions League football remains in west London next season, Lampard has also blooded in Chelsea’s youngsters.
Mason Mount, Billy Gilmour, Fikayo Tomori, Reece James and Tammy Abraham have enjoyed breakthrough seasons under Lampard.
