Kai Havertz is ‘edging closer’ to joining Chelsea after he reportedly missed Bayer Leverkusen’s pre-season fitness tests this weekend.

Frank Lampard has been given cash to splash this summer and has already built an impressive new-look squad with the arrivals of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell for a combined £131.3m, plus Thiago Silva on a free.

But the boss is not stopping there, with the Blues legend now intent on sealing a deal for German wonderkid Havertz that would smash the club’s transfer record.

Chelsea are expected to sign Havertz in the coming days

Chelsea and Leverkusen have been in discussions over a deal for the 21-year-old for weeks, with reports claiming the transfer fee could rise to as much as £90million.

And latest reports from Germany claim the transfer is on the cusp of completion, after Havertz was absent as Leverkusen put the entire squad through their paces in a day of fitness tests ahead of the new Bundesliga season.

According to Bild, Havertz was present at the club on Friday and Saturday for coronavirus testing, which he needed to complete in order to play in Germany’s upcoming Nations League games against Spain and Switzerland.

However, Bild also claim he was a no-show on Sunday for the club’s annual fitness tests, which suggests he will be a Chelsea player sooner rather than later.

Many expected Havertz’ move to west London to go through last week after the Blues agreed a £72m initial fee with Bayer Leverkusen, which could rise to that £90m fee with add-ons.

That would make the 21-year-old Chelsea’s most expensive signing ever, with the current transfer record standing at the £71.6m  it took to sign goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.

But, it’s understood talks over when these add-ons would be paid has caused delays.
