Manchester United closing in on signing of Donny van de Beek despite late Tottenham approach for Ajax star
Manchester United appear to have won the race to sign Donny van de Beek, despite a last-gasp bid from Tottenham for the Ajax star.
Van de Beek, 23, was linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona as well as a host of Premier League clubs following Ajax’s magical run to the Champions League semi-finals.
The Daily Mirror reports that the Dutchman has chosen United after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer launched a charm offensive to land him. talkSPORT also understands United are close to signing him.
The report also says United’s chief negotiator Matt Judge moved in to finalise an agreement with Van de Beek on Sunday after Spurs’ attempt to hijack the move.
Van de Beek has agreed a five-year deal, with the option of an extra twelve months. United are understood to be paying Ajax £40million for his services.
The player was reportedly impressed with Solskjaer’s determination to sign him as well as the direction the club are going in after returning to the Champions League with a third-placed finish in last season’s Premier League.
He refused to play in Ajax’s friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday as he waited for the Red Devils to make an official bid.
Real Madrid appeared to have wrapped up the signing of Van de Beek after agreeing a £44.6m fee with Ajax, however, the deal collapsed due to the coronavirus crisis.
This latest news means it’s more and more unlikely that he’ll join Ronald Koeman, who coached him when in charge of the Netherlands national team, at Barcelona.
Van de Beek’s move to United may have been helped by the fact Ajax’s chief executive is former player Edwin van der Sar.
Van de Beek has been with Ajax since he was a boy, breaking into their first-team in 2015. He’s scored 41 goals in 175 appearances and has ten international caps.
