Football fans will remember that live sport was among the many industries impacted by the national lockdown as Premier League football took an involuntary three-month hiatus between March and June.

However, that does not look like it will be the case this time round.

The Athletic reports that top-flight football is unlikely to be impacted by a second national lockdown, which is expected to be announced on Monday before coming into force on Wednesday.

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce criticises the current price of pay-per-view Premier League football and fears coverage is becoming over-saturated

While the situation is ‘fast-moving and unpredictable’, it is understood the Premier League are confident football will be allowed to continue in its current format without fans.

“The virus doesn’t spread well in outdoor settings and the close contact time in sports like football is very short,” said one MP, as quoted by The Athletic.

“The Department for Culture, Media and Sport seem keen to keep outdoor sport going at all levels.”

It is thought that while COVID-19 took the football world by surprise earlier this year, it is now better-placed to handle the situation.

While multiple top-flight players have tested positive for coronavirus, testing protocols have seen them quickly isolated to prevent any further spread, with fixtures going ahead according to plan.

However, the new restrictions look set to delay the return of fans to stadiums until at least 2021.

There were hopes that supporters could return in some capacity before Christmas, but The Athletic claims that fans in stadiums is now off the political agenda until the new year at the very earliest.
