Manchester United don’t get penalty despite ball hitting Callum Hudson-Odoi on hand inside Chelsea box… even after incident is REVIEWED by VAR
Callum Hudson-Odoi had his heart in his mouth on Sunday afternoon when referee Stuart Atwell was recommended to have another look at an incident involving the Chelsea ace.
The ball hit Hudson-Odoi on the hand inside his own box as he competed with Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.
It wasn’t noticed at the time, but Atwell was told to look at the incident again on his pitchside monitor by VAR.
However, it wasn’t clear whether Greenwood had touched the ball with his arm before it hit Hudson-Odoi.
After much deliberation, Atwell decided to NOT give the Red Devils a penalty, much to Chelsea and Hudson-Odoi’s relief.
It may seem a let-off for Thomas Tuchel’s side, with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville saying it ‘probably’ should have been a penalty for Man United.
Minus the Hudson-Odoi incident, the Stamford Bridge clash has been uneventful as both teams went in at half time drawing 0-0.
However, the 20-year-old has had an eventful time recently, having been substituted after coming on during Chelsea‘s last Premier League outing.
Thomas Tuchel said after the 1-1 draw at Southampton: “It was not the gameplan, I was not happy with his attitude against the ball, he forgot the counter-pressing situation sometimes.
“We talked about how we expected his energy, work rate and strife from the games. I trust him a lot, I think he’s played every match. But today I was not happy.
“I had the feeling he could not help and he did not accept the intensity that is needed. I took this decision, it’s a hard decision today. But tomorrow it’s forgotten.”
