Manchester United forward Anthony Martial accused of ‘not loving the game’ and having ‘different priorities’ as he’s benched at Chelsea
Anthony Martial’s struggles this season are deeper than a simple lack of form, it has been suggested.
The striker has scored just seven goals in 32 appearances this term and has come under fire for his performance levels in recent weeks.
Stats like that would be a worry for any Premier League striker and, for Martial, this is due to a lack of effort, according to Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
Ahead of Man United‘s Premier League trip to Chelsea on Sunday, Souness started the conversation about the Frenchman, 25.
Souness said: “Martial, I’m not surprised you leave him out.
“He’s a young man with all the talent to succeed at the highest level. Will he be disappointed he’s not playing today? Does he ever show he’s got a real passion for the game? Do you ever see him emotional about the game? I’ve never seen it.
“He’s one of those players who will end up looking back on his career and thinking, ‘I could have done so much more’. I’m a fan, but I’m not a fan.
“I said at the start of the season, ‘the biggest challenge Ole has is keeping the fire under Martial’, because he had a good end to the season.
“But I don’t think that’s happened.”
Red Devils legend Roy Keane added: “He doesn’t look like he loves the game; that’s always a worry, he doesn’t love the game.”
Ex-Chelsea striker Hasselbaink concurred with Souness and Keane but suggested Martial doesn’t necessarily view scoring goals as his main priority.
Hasselbaink said: “His priorities are in a different place.
“I think for him it’s more important to go past three players and talk about that, ‘look how I got past three players’, but not put the ball in the net. That’s more important to him, that’s the perception that I get from him.”
