Mason Mount’s father admits he feared for son’s future in Chelsea first-team after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard
Mason Mount’s father, Tony, has revealed his fears about his son’s future in the Chelsea first-team after Frank Lampard was replaced by Thomas Tuchel.
Tony Mount joined the talkSPORT Breakfast on Wednesday for a brilliant interview about his son’s stunning journey to Premier League and England stardom.

While the young midfielder appears to still have his doubters, Mount Snr insisted he has never had any worries about where the Chelsea ace will end up.
Although, it appears he did have concerns over how Tuchel’s arrival as manager would affect his son’s career, following the departure of a manager in Frank Lampard who valued the 22-year-old as one of his most trusted players.
Mount was dropped to the bench for the German’s first game in charge against Wolves.
He’s not looked back since then, having started every game bar two since the coach’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, but Mount’s father admitted he ‘wasn’t sure’ about his son’s role when the new boss came in.
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, Tony said: “I’ve always felt for every obstacle that’s been put in Mason’s way and every level he’s been asked to play at, I’ve always felt he can play at that level and I’ve always thought there’s more in there.

“I still think there’s more in there, I think there’s a lot more to come. We talk about it and he feels the same.
“It does surprise me sometimes when he scores goals, like against Liverpool, and I’m pleased about it because I know it’s in there.”
Asked for his reaction to the criticism and lack of credit given to his son for his performances for Chelsea and England, he replied: “It’s tough.
“Frank Lampard is not picking him for 80 games because he likes him and he’s a nice lad, he’s picking him because he wants to win football watches and he trusts him.
“He was a go-to player with Frank, he played him in about five different positions.
“I wasn’t sure to be honest [when Tuchel came to the club]. The manager had to learn about Mason. I think he knew who he was but I’m not sure he was that familiar with him and it was down to Mason to show him what he can do in training and on the pitch in games.

“Thomas Tuchel came in and made a statement in the first game and played experience in his opinion, but Mason got on and has started all but two games under Thomas.
“So I had concerns because you don’t know what the agenda is, but Mason has put that right.”
Mount Snr also admitted he was devastated to not be able to watch his son star for club and country over the last year.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, games have been played behind closed doors.
Plans are in place to get fans back in stadiums before the end of the season, but Tony is gutted to have missed out of watching his son achieve his Premier League and England dreams after a long journey.
“It’s awful, it’s really bad to have your son play in the Premier League, let alone England, and not being able to be in the stadium watching. It’s devastating,” Tony continued.
“I was fortunate to go to the Chelsea vs Leeds game in December when they let 2,000 fans in and was blown away by how good it was and how much I missed it and how brilliant it was to watch my son play live in a stadium.”
