Liverpool are in talks to sign Ibrahima Konate, says Fabrizio Romano, but the transfer expert warns the deal is far from done at this stage.

Reports emerged earlier this week that the Reds are close to making the RB Leipzig star their first signing of the upcoming transfer window.

Romano told talkSPORT Liverpool are in talks with the centre-back’s agent but nothing has been signed yet.

He added that the German club are not willing to listen to any offers of less than €40million (£34.2m), which is his reported release clause.

The acquisition of Konate would be welcomed by Liverpool fans, who has been labelled as good enough to play for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Romano also claimed the Merseyside club view him as ‘one of the best centre-backs for the future’.

Konate would also bolster Liverpool’s options in defence, which has been stretched a number of times this term with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both sustaining long-term injuries this term.

However, Romano warned that Konate, despite being 21 years old, has amassed a fair amount of injuries already.

He was part of Leipzig’s squad to face Liverpool in this season’s Champions League but didn’t feature in either leg as he made his recovery from his latest knock.

Romano told talkSPORT: “Liverpool are in talks with the agent, they’re trying to find out if they can sign the player.

“The deal is not done, it is not signed yet. They’re in talks with the player about the contract and everything – he has a release clause with Leipzig, who want €40m (£34.2m).

Konate has had injury issues but is still a promising young centre-back with a cheap-ish release clause

“It’s not done at the moment, they’re just waiting for the player. He’s one of the targets on the list, they want a new centre-back in the summer. It’s for sure not a done deal.

“He’s looking for a five-year contract, he’s so appreciated. The only issue could be about the injuries and we all know how it is for Liverpool at the moment so they will want to be careful.

“Leipzig want Liverpool to pay the €40m release clause, they don’t want to negotiate about the price of Ibrahima Konate.

“Liverpool are convinced that he is one of the best centre-backs for the future. Some are saying that he could be better than [Dayot] Upamecano in the future. Imagine how much potential this player has.”
