Ralf Rangnick can create a new DNA and develop the young players at Manchester United – but only if the Premier League club is ‘clever’, says Steve McClaren
Former Manchester United coach Steve McClaren is excited by the thought of Ralf Rangnick developing the club but only if he’s given the tools to do so.
A new era at Old Trafford is under way with Rangnick now at the helm, although Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Man United’s Premier League clash at home to Arsenal on Thursday night.
There’s lots of talk about how he’ll set up the side and whether Cristiano Ronaldo will be a big part of the team with developing young players at the heart of Rangnick’s managerial ethos over the years.
And although Rangnick is only due to be in the job until the end of the season, McClaren is hopeful the German’s presence can set up a positive blueprint for the remainder of the campaign and beyond.
“I hope United are clever and they’ll allow him to build the club,” McClaren told talkSPORT Breakfast. “He’s gone in there six months as a manager and he’s a club builder.
“He goes on the three Cs of Concept, Creating a DNA – for the club a recognisable style of play with fast, attacking football and Competence – getting in the right staff and right players, that’s the key area.
“He’s got his disciples in Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, Jesse Marsch at RB Leipzig. They’ve all been very successful under him and he needs to deliver that from the present coaches or bring new ones in and bring the right players in.
“United have got cash and I hope they’re clever in creating the DNA for the football club and building it beyond.
“Carrick has kind of produced that a little bit especially at Chelsea with the energy, the pressing. They’re quite able to do that with the players they’ve got, they’re young and energetic.
“One thing I saw when researching Rangnick is that he loves young players and developing them. Man United have a lot of young players that need developing, they just need a style.
“Man United without a shadow of a doubt have the players to bring themselves forward.”
