A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault after Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood was suspended from playing or training with the Premier League club.

Accusations of domestic abuse were made against Greenwood, 20, in a series of social media posts on Sunday, which have since been deleted.

Greater Manchester Police said they had been made aware on Sunday of “online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence”.

The statement from GMP added: “An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. 

“He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.”

As enquiries continue, United announced Greenwood will not train at the club or be considered for selection.

A statement from United on Sunday afternoon read: “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”

The images and allegations were made on a woman’s Instagram page on Sunday morning, with graphic images shared online.

The posts have since been deleted.

In an earlier statement after the accusations were first made, United said: “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media.

“We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

Greenwood is considered one of the brightest talents in English football.

He has been at Man United since the age of six and progressed through the academy into the first-team.

His first start for the club came in 2019 and he broke a number of records along the way.

When he scored against Astana in the Europa League, he became their youngest ever goal scorer in a European competition at the age of 17 years and 353 days.

The forward has scored 35 times for the club in 129 appearances.

He has also made one appearance for the England senior side after playing for the England under-15s, 17s, 18s and 21s.
