Roy Keane’s opinion is ‘taken as gospel’, says Danny Mills, who suggests Manchester United legend’s ‘vicious’ views have led to fan backlash against Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire has taken a barrage of criticism from fans this season, and Danny Mills suggested Roy Keane is somewhat culpable.
The defender has had a season to forget so far with Manchester United struggling to finish in the top four.
He’s continued to perform well for England and helped them to a 3-0 win over the Ivory Coast.
But that’s not stopped the criticism coming his way with a training ground video leading to him becoming a laughing stock on social media.
Maguire was even booed before and in the early stages of the England match and Three Lions teammates have leapt to the player’s defence before and after it was played.
England boss suggested the ‘Wild West’ nature of social media is to blame for the criticism Maguire received and Mills believes social media clips of Keane have made Maguire suffer.
Keane has been a vocal critic of Maguire, digging out the centre-back and David de Gea in an explosive rant during Man United’s draw at Tottenham in June 2020.
The Irishman has also criticised Maguire this season, once doing an impression of the Man United captain ahead of a Red Devils match and also labelling Maguire’s celebration when scoring a goal for England as ’embarrassing.’
Mills added that the ‘particularly vicious’ way Man United legend Keane has expressed his views has led to increased criticism for Maguire.
“Roy Keane has massive influence, unbelievable,” Mills said on Kick Off. “Roy Keane says it, it’s gospel.
“I think when Roy Keane speaks we all sit up and listen. I think he’s got huge gravitas in the game, for what he’s achieved, for what he’s done and everything he’s gone through and achieved in the game.
“You do have to listen but he can be particularly vicious at times.
“If Alan Shearer, Ian Wright or Jamie Redknapp says that we just go ‘okay, that’s their opinion.’ But when Roy Keane says it, everyone goes ‘that’s the right opinion because Roy Keane has said it.'”
“How many times have these people seen Harry Maguire play for 90 minutes?” Mills added. “They’ll have seen snippets and they’ll have heard comments from Roy Keane everywhere no matter what.
“No matter how he’s played, if Roy Keane says he’s had an absolute shocker and it’s disgraceful and he’s had a stinker we all go ‘well, he has done’, even without watching the game ourselves and going through it.
“We listen because it’s Roy Keane and he’s spoken so without seeing it as ourselves we take his opinion as gospel. Maybe we shouldn’t do that.
“Then you get memes, then you get social media and trolls and everything else comes into it and it does influence opinion.”
