Tottenham Hotspur confirm deal for Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic who reunites with Antonio Conte as Italian targets big summer transfer window
Ivan Perisic has been reunited with former Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte, signing a two-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur.
Following his medical, Perisic has become Conte‘s first signing of the summer as the Italian begins building his squad for next season.
The pair previously worked together at the San Siro, with Conte leading Inter to the Serie A title in 2020/21, and the Italian knows exactly what the 33-year-old can do.
Although typically deployed on the left of Inter Milan’s midfield this season, the former Borussia Dortmund player can play both in the wing-back position – as he did under Conte at Inter – and as a forward.
With his double threat in mind, the Croatia international will serve as competition for Ryan Sessegnon with Sergio Reguilon’s future uncertain.
“We are delighted to announce the transfer of Ivan Perisic,” read a Spurs statement.
“The vastly experienced Croatia international will join the Club on 1 July following the expiration of his contract at Internazionale and has agreed a deal that will run until 2024.”
Prior to the official announcement, Perisic took to Instagram to thank Inter for his time at the club.
“After 254 games, 55 goals, 49 assists, 3 trophies and 18.934 minutes spent on the pitch wearing this glorious jersey; my journey here has come to an end,” he wrote.
“Even though every end means a new beginning it’s important to reflect back on these past years and show you my deepest appreciation for the work accomplished.
“It was an unforgettable learning experience for me as a player and for my whole family.
“To the team, the staff, to all the employees but most importantly to the fans: you will always have a special place in my heart. I leave feeling privileged having this club in my portfolio.”
Despite leaving on a free transfer, Perisic was by no means unwanted by Inter Milan.
The Croatian played a vital role for Simone Inzaghi’s side, scoring 10 goals and making nine assists in 49 games in the 2021/22 season.
He only missed one game through injury, but also came off in his final game for the club with a pulled calf on his right leg.
And the Italian club’s chief executive expressed how disappointed he was that he was unable to convince Perisic, who made 254 appearances for the club, to stay.
“There is regret,” Giuseppe Marotta said following news of the Croatian’s decision to join Tottenham Hotspur.
“But he wanted to try a new experience in the Premier League.
“We were not in a position to make better offers, simply his choice was based on a different future than the current one. Maximum respect for that and a big thank you to him as well.”
Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster is also expected to sign for Spurs as a back up to captain Hugo Lloris, as talkSPORT revealed last week.
He is set to sign a deal when his current contract with the Saints expires next month.
The north London side have recently received a new injection of money, with £150million being given to them for transfers by majority shareholder Joe Lewis.
And the double deal signifies that, despite fears Conte could leave without the right backing from the Tottenham hierarchy, so far, his wishes are being met.
