Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares has completed a move to join Marseille on a season-long loan, the Premier League club has confirmed.

And with it, he has secured an upgrade to play Champions League football next season and a level above his Gunners teammates.

Tavares has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal following the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The 22-year-old left-back joined the Gunners last summer from Benfica in his native Portugal.

He made 28 appearances in all competitions, contributing one goal and two assists, including 13 starts in the Premier League.

But it appears he did not convince manager Mikel Arteta he was good enough to play a further part in the Spanish coach’s Gunners revolution.

Tavares was behind Kieran Tierney in the Arsenal starting XI anyway, but Zinchenko’s arrival from Man City for £30million pushed the Portuguese ace further down the list.

And he has now sealed a move to France with Marseille, who finished last season as runners up in Ligue 1 behind champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Tavares was previously set to join Serie A club Atalanta on loan, only for that deal to collapse earlier in the window.

That has allowed Marseille to enter the race, with Taveres travelling to France for his medical on Friday before a deal was announced on Saturday.

It means he will enjoy Champions League football with the French side this season – while his Arsenal teammates will be playing in the Europa League.

An Arsenal statement read: “Everyone at Arsenal wishes Nuno all the best this coming season with Marseille.”
