Allan Saint-Maximin’s last-gasp volley salvages point for Newcastle United against Wolves to extent Magpies unbeaten start to the season
Allan Saint-Maximin’s stunning volley salvaged a point for Newcastle late on in an entertaining 1-1 against Wolves at Molineux on Sunday.
The result ensured Wolves extended their Premier League winless run to 11 games stretching back to last season, whilst the Magpies continued their unbeaten start to the campaign.
In-form Saint-Maximin produced his moment of magic in injury time to cancel out Ruben Neves’ excellent first-half strike.
Wolves started the clash on the front font and went close in the early exchanges through Pedro Neto.
But Newcastle hit back and looked particularly menacing in attacking areas through Miguel Almiron and in-form forward Saint-Maximin.
Newcastle were without injured pair Brazilian star Bruno Guimaraes and striker Callum Wilson, and it showed, as Eddie Howe’s side lacked cutting edge in the final third.
Joe Willock missed a gilt-edged chance for the visitors after just 10 minutes when he fired wide from 10 yards and the goal gaping, as new £58m record signing Alexander Isak watched on form the stands.
Despite the visitor’s dominance, Wolves reminded Newcastle of their attacking threat when club record signing Matheus Nunes headed over when unmarked from 12-yards out.
The opening goal came in the 38th minute when Neves fired past the outstretched arms of Nick Pope.
Newcastle’s Fabian Schar was luckily to escape a red card for a reckless challenge on Neto early in the second half.
The Magpies pushed forward for an equaliser but Wolves continued to pose the threat of a second goal on the counter attack.
Wolves defended resolutely to keep Newcastle at bay and were denied a second goal when VAR ruled out a Raul Jimenez strike after Ryan Fraser was impeded in the build up.
But Saint-Maximin and the travelling Newcastle fans had the last laugh when he volleyed a superb equaliser in added time.
Newcastle could have won it in the dying seconds when Elliot Anderson’s header came off the crossbar but Wolves held out for a point.
