Unai Emery can’t come in soon enough to ‘sort out’ Aston Villa, says Gabby Agbonlahor after they were ‘battered’ in 4-0 defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park
Gabriel Agbonlahor has stated incoming Aston Villa boss Unai Emery can’t come in soon enough to ‘sort out’ the side after they were ‘battered’ by Newcastle.
The Villans lost 4-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday to leave them two points clear of the Premier League bottom-three.
Villa’s performance was a stark contrast from their 4-0 win over Brentford last week in interim boss Aaron Danks’ first game in charge.
Danks will now hand the side over to former Arsenal manager Emery, who will begin his managerial duties on November 1.
And ex-Villa striker Agbonlahor believes his beloved club are in desperate need of guidance ahead of next Sunday’s clash with Manchester United.
He told talkSPORT: “Today looked like an Aston Villa side that we saw under Steven Gerrard.
“They played Chelsea and deserved to win that game with the chances they had, then they played the next game [against Fulham] and are dreadful.
“Then they win 4-0 against Brentford, then today it’s like poor Aston Villa again – where was that energy from last week, that commitment?
“It looked like a team that really needs a new manager to come in now and really sort out these players.
“And pick which players he’s going to want to keep and which players he wants to move on.
“Because that was a battering today, I’ve not seen Aston Villa battered like that in a long time.”
The Midlands outfit failed to hit the target from their three shots during their defeat against the Magpies, while they also failed to have a single corner.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle, Danks commented on Villa’s dismal display in Tyneside.
He said: “It’s really disappointing. The first half was an even contest.
“The penalty obviously gives them a bit of belief. We tried to tweak one or two things but they had a really good spell and punished us.
“There are a lot of sombre heads in the dressing room. There are things we could have done better.
“Newcastle are a team in form, a team that is high flying. We have to try and find ways to stay in the game.”
