Rio Ferdinand has hailed Erik ten Hag for his decision to drop Marcus Rashford, describing it as a ‘positive’ for the Manchester United dressing room.

Rashford was a shock omission from the Red Devils’ starting line-up for their Premier League clash at Wolves, live on talkSPORT.

Explaining the decision to bench Rashford, Ten Hag said: “Internal discipline. No details. Our rules. Now focus on the game.

“He is in very good shape and nobody can play every game.”

The news about ill-discipline from a player who has a very good reputation on and off the pitch has come as a huge shock.

This isn’t the first time Ten Hag has taken a hard line with Alejandro Garnacho being dropped on Man United’s pre-season tour for being late with meetings.

And although the specific reason for Rashford being left out hasn’t been disclosed, Ferdinand praised Ten Hag for his approach, adding that Man United have lacked ‘discipline’ in recent times.

Reacting to the news of Rashford being dropped, Ferdinand told BT Sport: “It’s disappointing, when you come here as a fan you want to see your best players playing.

“At the same time, you’re pleased the manager is keeping to his principles where if someone does something wrong, they get punished for it.

“If players respond to this type of decision with respect, if you step out of line you will be punished, that can only be positive for the dressing room.

“This changing room has probably needed that bit of hardness and discipline. He’s cold and concise – you will like and respect and appreciate that in the dressing room.”

Meanwhile, Man United legend Paul Scholes added: “It’s difficult to know the truth. He [Ten Hag] said ‘internal disciplinary’, maybe lateness.

“He’s got the lad in the form of his life but for him to stand by it, we will see if it’s a wise decision.

“I love him [Ten Hag] – he doesn’t care who it is, he’s obviously done something that’s upset him.”
