Danny Murphy says Manchester United can win the treble he won at Liverpool this season and admits he’s ‘worried’ about Red Devils’ resurgence

There’s no reason why Manchester United can’t win THREE trophies this season after their Carabao Cup success, believes Danny Murphy.

The Red Devils got the better of Newcastle in the Wembley final on Sunday, ending their six-year hoodoo without silverware.

With the Glazer family expected to relinquish control of the club and performances on the pitch improving under Erik ten Hag there’s huge optimism among fans.

Club legend Paul Scholes quipped that four trophies this season is still a possibility, with Man United eight points off Premier League leaders Arsenal.

But Murphy is deadly serious when he says Ten Hag’s side can win the Europa League and FA Cup this term.

“I’m a tad worried they could do really well this season and I mean that from my Liverpool head,” Murphy said on Kick Off. “For the Premier League it’s great that they’re back.

“They’re favourites for the Europa League for a reason, when you look at the other teams.

“FA Cup, they could end up winning that. It’s not beyond them, there’s only really Manchester City left. The way they’re playing you’d only fancy City to have a real chance of beating them.

“Even a treble, I think that they could do it. They might not but they’ve done it before.

“Winning trophies and winning games creates confidence. The way they’re playing at the moment, what’s going to stop it? What’s going to halt their progress? Probably an injury, a bad one to Casemiro or Marcus Rashford.”

Man United defender Luke Shaw hinted at wanting to achieve more success with the club as he revealed the team’s celebrations of their Carabao Cup win were rather muted.

“There were not really many celebrations last night… in the changing room and stuff it was a nice feeling to get our first one all together.

“I think getting a little bit of a taste of that, we want more and that’s our aim for the rest of the season.”

If Man United were to also win the Europa League and FA Cup as well it would emulate the success Murphy enjoyed at Liverpool, who won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in the 2000/01 season.

Liverpool had been subject to derision for celebrating winning the ‘Mickey Mouse treble’ by Man United fans, but perhaps those fans could be persuaded to change their minds should the Red Devils bring home those two trophies in May.
