Talks have progressed quickly over the past couple of weeks and a fee has now been agreed with Ajax.

The Dutch club have accepted a fee of £40m, plus add-ons, for Timber from Arsenal.

It means the defender could become the second signing at the club this summer.

The Gunners have already confirmed the arrival of Kai Havertz from Chelsea and are also closing in on Declan Rice from West Ham.

Timber is exactly the kind of player that Arteta loves, young and versatile.

He has primarily been used at centre-back for Ajax but he can also play at right-back and even in defensive midfield.

It makes him similar to Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu, who have also operated across the backline at times for the Gunners.

But Arteta played a major role in talks and had conversations with Timber, convincing him to snub interest from other Premier League clubs and join Arsenal.

The north London outfit initially bid £30m for the 22-year-old while Ajax demanded more.

And Arsenal returned with a second offer worth at least £40m, which has duly been accepted by the Eredivisie giants.

Manchester United were heavily interested in the youngster last season and was earmarked by Erik ten Hag as a special talent.

The Dutch coach had worked with Timber at the Amsterdam Arena while he also signed his teammates Antony and Lisandro Martinez.

It makes for an exciting summer for Arsenal as they close in on a triple swoop for Havertz, Rice and Timber.

And there could be more incomings with another midfielder tipped to arrive.

Moises Caicedo remains high on the wish list after a move fell through in January while Southampton's Romeo Lavia is also being looked at.

As for exits, Thomas Partey and Emile Smith Rowe have been linked with moves away.
